FIAB's 12th National Cycling Rally
"Under a flight of pink flamingos"
Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy - June 17-20, 1999

FIAB's 12th annual cycling rally includes four days of cycling along southern Sardinia's sandy coastal beaches and high cliffs made precious by a sea of crystal clear water.  But not just beaches! This trip also lets participants discover some of the area's ancient centers and along the dikes of the wetlands of Molentargius and Santa Gilla surrounding the island's capital town of Cagliari.
Participants will be able to choose between routes based on different levels of ability often taking cyclists under the curious watch of migrating flamingos that have made Cagliari their transitory home for many years. The itineraries are on both paved and unpaved roads, with some unavoidable uphill climbs.
Very briefly we present the activities scheduled for this four day long rally:

Thursday, June 17: In the afternoon, rally participants will meet in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, situated in the city's center, to be greeted by Cagliari's authorities. After which cyclists will be introduced to the city with a tour of the historical area.

Friday, 18 June:  After traversing the wetlands of Molentargius cyclists will bike a panoramic route along the area's south eastern coast, stopping for a calming swim on the beaches of the special beauty (Capitana, Geremeas, Solanas, Villasimius).

Saturday, 19 June:  Using the local train system to Iglesias cyclists will bike to the island's western side by passing through the centers of Fluminimaggiore, Buggeru and Masera to Nebida, an area of particular beauty and historical interest located by the sea.

Sunday, 20 June: Cyclists will bike along Santa Gilla's dikes to the center of Assemini, Elmas and Sestu.

Bicycles are required to be in good condition and cyclists are advised to have the tools necessary to make small repairs. Helmet use is also advised.
